The black tube eel is found either alone or in groups at depths of 1 to 35 meters, where it lives in a burrow it has dug itself, into which it can vanish in a flash when disturbed.
The burrow’s stability is ensured by a secretion from a gland at the tip of the animal’s tail.
The burrow is constructed in regions with muddy-sandy bottoms.
Although the German name suggests a black tube eel, the animal is actually more gray to brown and has a light spot above its gills.
The tube eel measures just 2.4 cm in diameter.
